Pat Cummins Denies Comments About India’s Champions Trophy Venue
Pat Cummins, the Australian cricket captain, has strongly denied comments that were misattributed to him regarding India’s venue advantage in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The comments, which were mistakenly credited to Cummins, stirred controversy after being published by an Australian media outlet.
Cummins Accuses Code Cricket of Misrepresentation
Cummins, who is not participating in the tournament, took to social media to accuse Code Cricket of wrongly attributing remarks to him. On February 25, Code Cricket tweeted suggesting that Cummins had criticized the ICC for allegedly favoring India in the tournament. The tweet also claimed that Cummins referred to the Champions Trophy as a “farce” and slammed the venue selection process, particularly with India playing all its group-stage matches at a single venue.
Clarification on Misattributed Comments
However, the comments in question were actually made by former England pacer Jonathan Agnew, not Cummins. Agnew had expressed his discomfort over India’s advantage of playing all their matches at one venue, believing it gave them an unfair edge, while other teams had to travel to multiple locations. Agnew, in an interview with ABC Sport, said, “I feel very uncomfortable about the way India is being treated at the moment… If you’re going to play international tournaments, you can’t pick and choose where you play. I don’t see how long this can carry on—it makes a farce of these tournaments.”
Cummins Responds to Media Error on Social Media
Upon realizing the mix-up, Cummins quickly took to social media (X, formerly Twitter) to set the record straight. Tagging Code Cricket, he clarified, “I have definitely never said this. @codecricketau,” reinforcing that the comments were not his and urging the media outlet to correct the error.
