Mohammad Hafeez Critiques Babar Azam’s Performance After Pakistan’s Loss to India
Following Pakistan’s defeat to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, former captain Mohammad Hafeez has raised concerns about Babar Azam’s ability to deliver in crucial moments. The six-wicket loss has jeopardized Pakistan’s chances of defending their title.
Pakistan’s Modest Total and India’s Comfortable Chase
Pakistan, batting first, managed to post a modest 241 runs but was bowled out in the final over. India comfortably chased down the target with 45 balls to spare, largely due to a remarkable century by Virat Kohli.
Hafeez Compares Babar Azam to Virat Kohli
During a TV appearance, Hafeez made a bold statement, saying, “Babar Azam is not the true king; it is Virat Kohli.” He highlighted Kohli’s consistent performances around the world, contrasting them with Babar’s inability to make a match-winning impact, particularly in crucial games.
No Match-Winning Performances Against India, Says Hafeez
Hafeez went on to compare Babar’s career to that of former Pakistan great Inzamam-ul-Haq. He pointed out that Babar Azam has never delivered a match-winning performance against India in his ten-year international career. Hafeez emphasized how Inzamam would often step up in difficult situations, something he feels Babar has failed to do.
Lack of Impact in SENA Countries
Another area of concern for Hafeez is Babar’s performances in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). He noted that great players not only contribute but dominate, and Babar has yet to claim any “Player of the Series” awards in these challenging environments.
The Need for Fresh Talent in Pakistan Cricket
Hafeez also called for a shift in Pakistan’s cricketing approach, urging the team to look beyond underperforming players and focus on those excelling in domestic cricket. He believes that promoting these players could bring new hope, as they could shine in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
India’s Dominant Win Keeps Them in Title Hunt
Virat Kohli’s century guided India to a comprehensive six-wicket win against Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Chasing 242 runs, India reached the target with ease, thanks to Kohli’s 100* off 111 balls and a crucial partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 56 runs. Pakistan’s total of 241 was insufficient, with Saud Shakeel top-scoring for his team at 62. Kuldeep Yadav’s three-wicket haul helped India maintain their strong form in the tournament.
